Israel is again under the harsh gaze of the UN Human Right’s Council. The Council’s favorite representative Desmond Tutu has been sent on a “Mission” to find evidence of war-crimes committed in Beit Hanun during a 2006 IDF operation.
It goes without saying that Tutu, an aging priest with a long record of anti-Israeli bias, is the right man for the job. After all, a masters degree in “biblical interpretations” makes the theologian more than qualified to conduct an investigation spanning military, social & legal matters. Tutu could expedite the process, for with G*d on his side he need only look into the sky for answers. Surely we can rely on the UNs high standards of ensuring fair, professional investigations.
Curiously
, Israel’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Aharon Leshno-Yaar, doesn’t think so.
He refused to even discuss Tutu’s allegations, stating that Israel rejects it’s validity and calling it:
“another regrettable product of the Human Rights Council“. Leshno-Yaar said he was “furious” that Tutu’s report “de facto legitimizes Hamas control of Gaza.”
“This does not serve the interests of Israel or the Palestinians or the cause of peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” he said.
I scratched my head on this one, after all, why would Israel, a plural democracy, deny a democratic body founded with the
“main purpose of addressing situations of human rights violations…”
Did Israel object or question whether the Human Rights Councils was objectively meeting it’s
“responsibility for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe” ?
Why would Israel reject the UN Human Rights COUNCIL?
As I pondered Israel’s antagonism I began to wonder about the nations that sat upon this Council. Unto which bastions of freedom & human rights are bestowed such critical responsibilities?
In order for the Council to send Tutu on such a mission they likely voted on the matter. I wondered, “what would a Council majority vote looks like? Who were these ultra-responsible, genuinely neutral nations?
The graph shows all of the current members of the Commission. Those colored Orange are nations that are either (a) Gross violators of human rights themselves, or (b) have vested interests in seeing Israel suffer; in most cases they were both. Notice how these nations form a majority? Without further ado:
| Angola | Argentina |
| Azerbaijan | Bolivia |
| Bahrain | Brazil |
| Bangladesh | Cameroon |
| Bosnia and Herzegovina | Canada |
| Burkina Faso | France |
| Chile | Germany |
| China | Ghana |
| Cuba | India |
| Djibouti | Italy |
| Egypt | Japan |
| Gabon | Madagascar |
| Indonesia | Mauritius |
| Jordan | Netherlands |
| Malaysia | Philippines |
| Mexico | Republic of Korea |
| Nicaragua | Slovakia |
| Nigeria | Slovenia |
| Pakistan | Switzerland |
| Qatar | United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland |
| Russian Federation | Uruguay |
| Saudi Arabia | |
| Senegal | |
| South Africa | |
| Ukraine | |
| Zambia |
No, this graph is neither joke nor parody, it is the actual list of current members of the UN Human Rights Commission. It gives a new meaning to irony – the world’s worst human rights violators sitting upon the world body tasked with protecting these rights! A nation can torture it’s citizens on Monday, and then issue a Resolution against torture in the USA on Tuesday. The real victims continue to suffer while politically unpopular nations like Israel are targetted for resolution after resolution.
Beyond the absurdity of expecting such a group to protect anyone, there are also inherent dangers that have come from the UN’s perception as a group of nations seeking to better the world. When one reads that a nation has been sanctioned by the United Nations Human Right’s Commission they do not instinctively question the findings as they would if an article stated that a nation was sanctioned for human rights violations by Angola, Saudi Arabia & China… It is high time the world realized that they are one and the same.
