Excuse me while I pick my jaw off the floor! My head is spinning, there’s smoke coming out of my ears. News of cease-fire is trickling in, the Israeli government has reported it’s met its goals for the Gaza operation… AND NOT ONE WORD ON GILAD SHALIT?!
I sincerely hope the news is simply being held back. If Gilad Shalit is not released, this ceasefire is a major mistake.
If Hamas had the upper hand, does anyone think they would even consider a ceasefire? Hamas & the people of Gaza brought this debacle on themselves, Israel should give them a choice: further destruction or the immediate, unconditional release of Gilad Shalit. I cannot see any reason or logic to not demand this – if Hamas rejects the offer then they will have sealed their own fate (again!).

Furthermore, I sincerely hope that Israel has a plan for when Hamas inevitably starts up its Kassam operations. My solution is extremely simple, cost effective and legal. Whenever a Kassam rocket is fired, Israel should immediately retaliate to the launching position using artillery. If Hamas chooses to fire from dense areas (as they do) then they are legally & morally responsible for the deaths of their willing or unwilling human shields (law of war quite clear, if you hide within civilian areas, you are responsible for the civilians). This type of fluid response will cement the ’cause and effect’ of Hamas on Gazans lives. They will witness Hamas rocket teams firing from beside their homes, schools and shops, and then as the Hamas rocket team retreats, they will witness the immediate result of this action, a punishing barrage of artillery.
At the end of the day, Hamas is the responsibility of the Gazans. Gazans will have to eventually rise up if they want an end to this never ending misery. If Gazans continue to allow their homes and kindergardens to be used as bases of operation – so be it, this is the fate they have chosen. It’s high time the Arabs realized they are the masters of their own destiny, that it is their actions (or lack thereof) that has kept them stagnating as much of the world moves forward.
